Hogy Lures Charter Grade Perfect Stubby Needlefish – 5" 2oz
When subtle presentation and maximum distance are non-negotiable.
Where traditional poppers shout and swimmers wobble, the Hogy Charter Grade Stubby Needlefish 5" 2oz delivers the ultimate stealth approach. Engineered specifically for pressured gamefish, quiet nights, and calm waters, this compact needlefish plug mimics small, slender baitfish—like sand eels, silversides, and juvenile squid—with absolute precision.
Featuring a heavy 2 oz. aerodynamic rear-weighted profile, the 5-inch "Stubby" cuts straight through stiff ocean winds to reach distant rip lines, outer bars, and offshore feeds. Once in the water, its internal ballast system ensures it stays belly-down, giving off a controlled, life-like tail shimmy and a slow, natural glide that entices wary striped bass, bluefish, and tuna to strike.
Key Features & Benefits
-
Compact, Aerodynamic Build: The 5-inch, 2 oz density launches like a rocket, giving surfcasters and boaters elite casting distance without sacrificing a match-the-hatch profile.
-
Signature Glide & Shimmy Action: Shares the internal ballast system of the Surface Eraser to track true on ultra-slow retrieves, maintaining perfect balance and horizontal orientation.
-
Commercial-Grade Durability: Built with heavy-duty HD ABS plastic and a full through-wire harness from nose to tail to withstand big fish, sharp teeth, and heavy surf.
-
Conservation-Minded "Hook 1" Rigging: Fitted with a ultra-strong single belly VMC 4X treble hook paired with a hand-tied genuine bucktail flag on the tail. This setup reduces catch-and-release mortality while adding micro-pulsing action on the drop.
-
Translucent Finish: Designed to refract light naturally in clear or shallow water, preventing fish from inspecting and rejecting the lure.

How to Fish It
-
The Still Needle (Primary Retrieve): Keep your rod tip at a 45° angle. Retrieve ultra-slowly (one crank every 2–3 seconds) in calm water or at night. Let the bucktail flag and natural ballast do all the work.
-
Reel-Pause Method: Retrieve smoothly for 2 to 3 seconds, then pause briefly. The lure will settle naturally as the rear bucktail shimmers, triggering reaction bites on the restart.
-
Dead Drift / Current Swing: Cast cross-current or uptide near boulder fields, channels, or rips. Allow the tidal current to carry the plug in an arc, maintaining minimal reel tension to keep it swimming naturally.
